Frequently Asked Questions
HOW LONG IS AN SR-22 VALID?
As long as you pay the required premium and to keep your policy active, the SR-22 will remain in effect until the requirements for your situation have been met. In Ohio, the time requirement is generally 3 to 5 years.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY POLICY IS CANCELLED?
If your policy is cancelled while you are still required to carry an SR-22, your insurer is required to notify state authorities, which may result in a suspension of your driving privileges. Your insurance company will provide the state with advance notice before cancelling your coverage. If your policy is cancelled, your insurer will file an SR-26 with the state, indicating that your policy is no longer in effect.
ARE THERE ANY FEES FOR FILING AN SR-22?
Most states require a small filing fee when an SR-22 is first filed. There is usually no fee to renew an SR-22 unless you have allowed your policy to lapse. An SR-22 is filed for a specific driver, so if there are additional drivers on your policy who require an SR-22, you will need an SR-22 for each driver.
CAN I GET AN SR-22 IF I DON’T OWN A CAR?
Yes. If you require an SR-22 but don’t own a vehicle, Phil Ruth Insurance Agency can write a Non-Owner policy and add the SR-22 filing to that. This will protect you if you’re found at-fault in an accident while driving a vehicle not owned by you.
